Don’t Stop Moving

It’s never too late to start moving or exercising!  The oldest client I’ve trained was 95 years young.  Your heart is a muscle and, as with any muscle, exercise is what strengthens it.  Aerobic exercise like brisk walking, water walking briskly, jogging, swimming, cycling, Zumba, and other activities that use large muscle groups repetitively to get your heart pumping faster is the most beneficial type of exercise for your heart and blood vessels.  Ideally, you should be moving 30-minutes or more a day at least five days a week.  This can be broken down into 10-15 minute segments multiple times per day or done all at one time.  Your exercise should be moderate in intensity which means you should be breathing harder, your heart  should be beating faster and it should feel somewhat difficult.  If it feels easy and you can sing while you are exercising, you are not working hard enough for your heart to get stronger.  So find an activity you enjoy and can stick with for the long run and GET MOVING!!!

Don't Stop Moving

We don’t stop moving because we get old; we grow old because we stop moving. Don’t stop moving!

From chiropractic care to acupuncture to massage, chances are they have what you need. They are also currently offering small group classes which focus on balance training, low back and core strengthening and posture correction. Don’t put it off any longer. Call, email or stop by today to take advantage of all that Legacy has to offer and start living your best life!

Ozone Therapy And Its Benefits

What is ozone therapy?

Ozone has been used medically for many years. Ozone therapy is the injection of ozone gas into your body to treat a disease or wound. Research has found that ozone can be used to treat medical conditions by stimulating the immune system.

How Does It Work?

When ozone comes into contact with body fluids, the reaction that results causes more proteins and red blood cells. This can increase oxygen to the body. Research has shown that ozone therapy can inactivate:

  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • Fungi
  • Yeast
  • And Protozoa

What Does It Treat?

Ozone therapy has a variety of uses. It can help with breathing disorders, diabetes, immune disorders and it can help with pain and inflammation.

Ozone injections can help repair and tighten lax structures, partially torn connective tissue, cartilage, muscles and ligaments. Ozone halts that pain and inflammtion cycle which allows for better circulation, increased blood flow carrying nutrition and hydration of the damged tissues.

Those suffering from arthritis and other joint pain and inflammation have been shown to get relief from this type of therapy.

How Effective Is It?

Studies are being done right now and many results are promising. Several clinical trials are being conducted from heart disease to arthritis.

Research has shown that when used for osteoarthritis it can improve range of motion and delay decline. People with rheumatoid arthritis or back pain from bulging discs may also see relief from ozone therapy.

With more trials being done every day, the benefits of this therapy could prove to be far more beneficial than anyone realized!

Where Can You Go?

Legacy Clinic is now offering ozone injections for their patients. If you are interested in learning more or you would like to schedule an appointment, please contact us at:

Acupuncture in The Villages

Acupuncture in The Villages is an ancient form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that dates back over 5,000 years.  It is based on the theory that energy (QI) moves through the body using specific pathways (meridians).  An imbalance in the flow of Qi or energy moving through the meridians may cause a physiological effect in the body over time. Stress, poor eating habits, lack of sleep, hormonal imbalances, and strenuous activity may cause the body to become symptomatic.  Symptoms such as pain, anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, food cravings, irritability, brain fog, indigestion, and heart palpitations may occur if harmony is not restored to the Qi flow of the internal body.

Treatment:

Acupuncture Physicians use sterile, thin, disposable needles to activate specific points on the body to stimulate a healing function. A slight pinch, tingling, or burning sensation may occur at the site of the needle insertion for a brief moment.  A typical acupuncture treatment may last 20-30 minutes.  This time allows the body to relax and make internal changes.  Acupuncture causes the brain to release endorphins a natural opiate-like effect may occur.  The analgesic like effect is very helpful in the treatment of pain.  Also, a feeling of euphoria may occur after an acupuncture treatment due to the release of endorphins.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture to be effective for more than 35 common illnesses.

Allergies, sinusitis, abdominal pain, heartburn, constipation, IBS like symptoms, painful periods, PMS, low back pain, muscle, tendon, joint pain, headaches, migraines, sciatica, nerve injuries, addictions, and chronic pain.

Acupuncture Treats Heart Disease

February is Heart Health Month. The celebration was created in 1963 to bring more awareness to the prevalence of heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in this country, it causes more than 800,000 heart attacks occurring each year in the U.S. alone. Acupuncture treats heart disease.

What is heart disease?

Heart disease occurs when there is a breakdown in the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the heart.  Often, this is a result of plaque buildup in the arteries or vessels. Plaque accumulates when there is damage to the vessel walls. A few of the common contributors that cause this damage are high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, and smoking.

Why is heart disease so prevalent?

Lifestyle plays a big role in either preventing or producing heart disease. Those who exercise regularly, watch what they eat, and manage their stress, are far less likely to experience heart disease in their lifetime.  However, most people succumb to the typical modern lifestyle that consists of a lot of sitting, a lot of stress, and very little exercise. This lifestyle can also contribute to diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. These are also risk factors for heart disease.

The good news is that we can impact our heart health by changing our daily habits. The bad news is that a total lifestyle overhaul can be very intimidating. Enter, acupuncture.  Acupuncture is a great way to both treat and prevent heart disease.  It requires minimal effort on your part and doesn’t take up a lot of extra time.

How acupuncture treat heart disease?

Acupuncture helps decrease stress and regulate the stress response. The body has a natural reaction to perceived stress known as the sympathetic or “fight or flight” response.  It increases heart rate and blood pressure and releases glucose into the bloodstream for immediate use. This is good if we are trying to escape a burning building, but this response is also activated when we are pressed by work deadlines, or continually worried about paying our bills. Over time these small stressors have the sympathetic response working overtime and it starts to negatively impact digestion, sleep, mood, and of course our heart.

The fix to the “fight or flight” response is an activation of the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for functions that allow us to rest, digest, and heal. This helps bring our heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels back to normal. Acupuncture is very effective at activating this response. Consistent treatment can bring your system back into alignment and possibly reverse the negative impacts of chronic stress, helping to prevent further damage such as heart disease.

Acupuncture mitigates other risk factors. Studies have shown that acupuncture successfully treats conditions such as diabetes. It can help lower blood glucose levels and positively impact insulin sensitivity in individuals with the disease. Managing the symptoms of diabetes can lower the risk of developing heart disease.

If smoking is putting you at higher risk, then acupuncture may help you quit.  Although more research is needed, current studies show promise that acupuncture is a useful tool for smoking cessation by decreasing cravings and reducing symptoms of withdrawal.

Conclusion

Heart disease doesn’t have to be your fate. Acupuncture is a practice you can implement right away as a preventative measure. Not only will you be helping your future self, but your present self will reap the benefits as well.  You will notice that you sleep better, have more energy, less stiffness and less stress with only a few treatments. Ongoing care will help you feel your best and keep you healthy as you age.

NFL and Chiropractic

Did you know that all 32 teams in the National Football League provide all their player’s chiropractic healthcare as part of their medical team for managing and preventing injuries?

If all 32 NFL teams and owners trust their athletes in the hands of chiropractors and elite athletes trust chiropractors with their entire career, how powerful must chiropractic care be?

Tom Brady: “Chiropractic just makes you feel so much better. When I walk out of the clinic, I feel like I’m about three inches taller and everything’s in place. And as long as I see the chiropractor, I feel like I’m one step ahead of the game.”

Reggie Bush: ”I look at chiropractic care as important to keeping me healthy and at the top of my game.”

Jerry Rice: “I believe in chiropractic, and I know it works. You probably know about my long and successful career in football. I’m flattered by the testimonials to my durability. Football is a very rough and vigorous sport. Chiropractic was the key to keeping me in the game.”

Terrell Owens: “Those are the guys that put me on the field when I didn’t think I had a chance to be on the field. These are professionals, and God put them in my life for a reason.”

Chiropractic care can help you play longer and harder and stay in the game. The power of chiropractic has been proven through decades of athletic performance. Chiropractic care works with the body’s natural ability to heal resulting in feeling better but more importantly performing at your best.

If you take a look at the benefits professional football players receive from chiropractic care, then you’ll find these same benefits can have a positive impact on non-football players too (you know, the regular folk like us). Some of the benefits include:

Increase Mobility

  • In sports medicine, chiropractic adjustments help to minimize pain from movement and increase flexibility. This is obviously important for professional athletes, but it should be important to everyone else, too. Increased mobility through flexibility can help keep you from getting injured from something silly, such as walking down the stairs or picking up your teacup poodle.

Ease General Pain

  • In football, hulking beasts of men smash into each other – on purpose. This can lead to a lot of soreness, aches, and pains. Even though you may not spend a great deal of time crashing into other people on purpose, regular exercise can cause the same problem. Chiropractic care can help to keep your body working as it should in order to perform better and ease aches and pains along the way!

Prevent Injuries

  • Studies have found a direct link between regular chiropractic care in athletes and fewer sports-related injuries. The above-mentioned increase in flexibility and mobility plays a big role in injury prevention for athletes as well as weekend warriors. This is because it helps to keep the body strong, and a strong body is a body that is more injury resistant.

Better Endurance and Strength

  • It’s easy to see why professional athletes benefit from better strength and endurance, but it’s good for normal people too. I mean, you never know when the zombie apocalypse might happen and in that case, you’ll need all the endurance you can get. Zombies aside, increased endurance and strength are really helpful in increasing your ever-important mobility. As you age, mobility will help to keep you strong and less prone to accidents and injuries that can have a huge impact on your health.

At Legacy Clinic of Chiropractic, our team https://legacyclinicofchiropractic.com/our-team goes beyond conventional medicine by offering services and techniques which can relieve symptoms while at the same time addressing and resolving the underlying causes of your particular dysfunction.

If you have been experiencing low back pain and/or other related spinal symptoms such as neck pain, headaches, migraines, mid back pain, rib pain, carpal tunnel, sciatica, disc herniations or protrusions, neuropathy, pain/numbness/burning/weakness in your arms, hands, legs or feet.

Heart Health Month

February is heart health month and we wanted to share some different ways to keep your heart in great shape!

Everyone knows that exercise and diet are important to keep your body in good shape, but there are also other things our bodies need that they may not be getting.

Researchers report that CoQ10 may have significant benefits for people with cardiovascular disease (CVD), from reducing risk for repeat heart attacks and improving outcomes in patients with heart failure to lowering blood pressure and helping combat side effects of cholesterol-lowering statins.

Another supplement you might want to consider is OrthOmega. It has many benefits including:

  • Supports Cardiovascular Health and Blood Sugar Metabolism
  • Supports Cognitive Function and Development
  • Supports Healthy Skin, Joints and Connective Tissues
  • Increases Visual and Ocular Health
  • Maintains Normal Inflammatory Balance

Lastly another product that is very beneficial is Inflammatone. Inflammation is the body’s response to a bout of trauma. This can be physical such as a broken bone, dietary such as eating foods that you are sensitive to, or environmental such as pollution or heavy metals. Over time this can be harmful to your heart. This supplement helps support a proper inflammatory response while facilitating healthy blood flow without the unwanted side effects of pharmaceutical drugs.

Are You Compressed?

Do you hurt when you get out of bed? Maybe you are compressed.

Spinal compression can cause many symptoms including bulging or herniated discs, pinched nerves and pain to name a few. If you have aches and pains getting out of bed it may be time to ask yourself… Are you compressed?

How and why does compression happen?

Poor posture, certain degenerative diseases such as arthritis and injury can lead to compression. Some people may not notice any symptoms at first but compression can have a domino effect and can ultimately become debilitating. Compression happens when vertebrae lose the space they should naturally have between them. This, in turn, puts extra pressure on the discs in between the vertabrae. These discs can then bulge or herniate and can pinch nerves. These nerves run through your entire body so pain in your legs may originate from your back. Sciatica is a well known example of this.

Compression

What Can You Do?

Spinal decompression has been utilized for years to help people get relief from pain and other symptoms. Legacy Clinic is able to decompress both the lumbar (lower back) and cervical (neck, upper back) through the use of specialized tables and machines. These tables gently pull the hips downward or the neck upward putting motion in the vertebrae. Once the desired amount of resistance is reached, the pull will remain at that amount for a set amount of time before being released to half the amount. Over time, this can help to regain the natural spacing your body needs and can take the pressure off of the discs in between allowing them to heal on their own. Unlike inversion tables, the decompression tables are gentle enough not to cause muscle spasms and the pull can be increased as needed.

Animal Chiropractor – Dr. Angela

Many of our patients come to our clinic to get back to playing sports and exercising after an injury. Whether it is golf, tennis, yoga, or swimming, normal body mechanics are required. We have all had injuries or painful conditions that prevented us from our normal activity, but when it interferes with exercise it can lead to a downward spiral of inactivity. We have seen too many cases of back pain that leads to inactivity that leads to muscle weakness, weight gain, and further pain and inactivity. This can be a vicious cycle. It’s important, whether you’re a weekend warrior, a daily jogger, or even the canine athlete, to get back to activity as soon as possible after an injury is healed.
Whether it’s keeping canine athletes at their best, or helping the weekend golfer on the course for another couple of years, chiropractic can help athletes in many areas. Back pain is one of the most common and debilitating sports injuries, which chiropractic is suited to treat more effectively than most other modalities, including medications like NSAIDs and opioids. Other common sports injuries chiropractors treat are shoulder sprains, hip strains, tennis elbow, headaches, neck pain, IT band syndrome, and injuries from car accidents.
Did you know that Chiropractic is safe for everyone, kids, the elderly, and even your pets! It is a natural alternative to pain management as well as improving mobility and function.  Telltale signs that your pet has pain is limping, yelping when touched, crouching or flinching head when being pet, not lifting their head or tail, and not doing usual activities such as jumping up onto the couch or bed. Pets are able to be adjusted just like people, the only difference is the number of vertebrae (bones of the spine) and angle of the joints.  Animals respond extremely well to chiropractic as they do not carry the same level of stress as people.  Animals do not need to be adjusted as frequently as people as they usually hold their adjustments better than people.
If you have questions about animal chiropractic please talk to Dr. Angela!

5 Natural Ways To Strengthen Your Immune System

Our immune system is what keeps us alive. It’s our personal bodyguard against diseases and other hostile pathogens. It’s a complex system of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body against infection and maintain overall health. Learn 5 Natural ways to strengthen your immune system.

1. Avoid sugar and grains. They unbalance your gut flora and fertilize bad bacteria, yeast, and fungi.

  1. Your immune system is found throughout most of your body but concentrated in and around your gut. It may sound strange at first, but when you think about how much food passes through your digestive system – and that food carries microbes, potential allergens, and toxins into the body.

2. Get 15 minutes of sun exposure daily. The sun produces Vitamin D which supercharges immunity.

  1. Vitamin D keeps the immune system healthy by regulating white blood cells. If there is not enough immune system activity, frequent infections can occur. According to the USDA, the standard recommendation of vitamin D that adult women should take in order to prevent deficiency is between 600 to 800 international units per day, depending on age. The exact number is debatable, and some experts feel that a higher dose of vitamin D, 2ooo to 5,000 IU per day, may be more beneficial

3. Get 8 hours of sleep per night. This repairs your body and helps it recover faster.

  1. Research shows that a lack of sleep results in a decreased number of white blood cells. Even a single night of poor sleep can impair the immune system by reducing the number of natural killer cells. Most adults need a minimum of 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep per night. This number is even higher for children.

4. Exercise a minimum of 30 minutes per day. This activity triggers a rise in immune system cells, which increase your resistance to illness.

  1. To be immunologically fit, you need to be physically fit. White blood cells can become lazy. Exercise mobilizes them by increasing your blood flow, so they can do their surveillance jobs better and seek and destroy in other parts of the body. Experts recommend a minimum of 2 hours and 30 minutes per week.
  2. More than 70 percent of intensive care patients that are hospitalized because of corona are overweight (BMI over 25). Being overweight makes breathing difficult, it causes abnormal sugar values and higher blood pressure.

5. Manage daily stress as well as your reactions to circumstances beyond your control. Excessive stress dramatically weakens your immune system.

Post COVID Syndrome

Post COVID Syndrome is causing lingering symptoms in some Coronavirus survivors. Here are some things to know:

For many people around the world, COVID-19 does not end after the acute infectioon phase. Doctors are seeing a large amount of survivors develop symptoms that are “strikingly similar” to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. A CDC survey of 292 people who overcame COVID-19 found that more than a third of the study had lingering fatigue for two to three weeks after testing positive. Fatigue is just one of the symptoms that people have reported over the past several months.

The most common Post COVID Syndrome symptoms that people are reporting even after testing negative for two weeks are:

  • Persistant cough with sore throat
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Post COVID lung disease
  • Anxiety, depression and insomnia
  • Cognitive issues similar to moderate traumatic brain injury
  • Digestive problems such as irritable bowel, nausea, bloating and abdominal pain

So What’s The Good News?

Acupuncture may play a beneficial role in post COVID symptoms!

Post COVID Syndrome

The problem of persistent cough after recovering from Covid is very common. Such patients complain of dry cough, throat irritation and scanty white phlegm. Acupuncture produces 90 per cent effective rate with no side effects.

Patients develop extreme fatigue following a bout of Covid due to depletion of their Qi, because of the decrease in activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Acupuncture is given at selected acupoints for five days in a week for two weeks and 80 per cent patients have shown improvement in their fatigue levels.

Anxiety, depression and insomnia are very common in post-Covid patients and these can be effectively tackled by stimulating specific acupoints which release melatonin and the happy hormone — serotonin.

At Legacy Clinic of Chiropractic, we offer The Villages Acupuncture and Cupping treatments to help lung function, regulate immune function, and improve energy and vitality. While we don’t treat active Covid-19 infections in our office, we are available to treat post covid symptoms.

We have safely helped people recover their energy and vitality post-Covid with both Acupuncture and homeopathic Medicine.

Whether it’s managing stress and anxiety, helping insomnia, or treating post-viral symptoms, we are here to help.
