Cranial Facial Release (CFR) And Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)

Cranial Facial Release

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is required for the normal working of the brain and the spinal cord. It is produced by the choroid plexus in the brain and is distributed to all parts of the brain and the spinal cord. It measures only 150ml but performs numerous vital functions.

Third Circulation

The flow of the CSF within the brain and the spinal cord is termed the “third circulation” of the body, the first and second one being blood and lymph respectively.

Researchers have noted that the CSF flows in a rhythmic movement and the flow fluctuates within the cranium and the spinal canal. In a study by Dr. William Gardner Sunderland, it was concluded that the CSF flow matches the respiratory movements but the rate is slightly different from the respiratory rate. Thus, Dr. Gardner defined the flow as Primary Respiration.

Functions Of CSF

The most notable role of CSF is protection. Your brain is submerged in a pool of CSF which acts as an effective shock absorber. There is a potent cushioning effect on the brain against the skull. It also reduces the effective weight of the brain.

CSF maintains homeostasis of the interstitial fluid in the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid provides nourishment to the brain structures. It also carries hormones from the blood to the brain.

In addition to nourishment, the CSF assists in the removal of waste metabolites from the body. This includes microbes, drugs, and glycosylated proteins, etc. CSF’s cleansing and nourishing role makes it comparable to kidneys

Complications Of CSF Stasis

The blocked or static flow of the CSF can lead to multiple complications. The most common issue faced by halted or slow flow is raised fluid pressure in the cranium (skull) i.e. raised intracranial pressure.

Poor flow of cerebrospinal fluid is noted in the process of aging and neurodegenerative disorders.

Hydrocephalus is a serious complication that arises due to blockage and accumulation of CSF in the brain.

How Cranial Facial Release Can Improve CSF Flow?

The endonasal technique has multiple health benefits. The Cranial Facial Release technique can improve CSF flow by restoring cranial bones’ natural movement. As the skull bones also move in coordination with the respiratory movements, CFR enhances primary respiration.

Numerous studies have highlighted the positive impact of chiropractic adjustments on CSF flow. So, you can expect to see CSF flow amelioration with CFR.

Treatment modalities similar to CFR such as the craniofacial release have also been shown to boost CSF movement. So, CFR from a trained professional can keep your brain well-nourished while keeping disorders and premature aging at bay.
