Posture Health

Good posture health is extremely important. Poor posture can lead to pain and could lead to degeneration of the spine over time. Rounded shoulders posture describes the appearance of shoulders that are further forward than normal. People who have rounded shoulders often also have forward head position and increased slouching of the upper back.

As you can imagine poor posture health causes enormous stress on the neck and shoulders. This can lead to: neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, sleep disorders, and numbness among other things.

Some common causes for rounded shoulders include: sitting for extended periods in front of a computer, reading or texting on the phone with your head down, driving for extended periods of time in a bad posture, sleeping with poor posture, excessive weight training, cycling in poor posture and carrying heavy backpacks.

At Legacy Clinic, we want to help. A great exercise to help train your body is the doorway exercise. No need to go out and buy any equipment so long as you have a doorway! We encourage our patients to complete this 3-5 times a week. This easy exercise will help loosen the abs and chest muscles.

How to do it:

Stand in the doorway and align your hands and elbows with the door frame.

Posture Health

Step through the doorway until you feel the stretch.

Hold this position for 15-20 seconds, then return to the starting position.

Repeat this stretch 3 times.

If you’re suffering from rounded shoulders or think your posture could use some correcting, contact Legacy Clinic today and let them show you the proper ways to realign your body.

Promising Treatment to Avoid Back Surgery

Local doctor offers promising treatment to avoid back and neck surgery

An estimated 30 million Americans suffer from back and neck pain on a daily basis. According to Dr. John Theeck of Legacy Clinic, one common culprit is an injury or wear and tear to the gel-filled cushions or discs in the spine. This can lead to painful bulging or herniated discs, and degenerative disc disease. Even worse, the bulging or herniated discs may begin to pinch the delicate spinal nerves, causing sciatica, stenosis, or radiculopathy. This can result in debilitating back or neck pain, as well as pain, numbness, or weakness traveling into the buttocks, legs, or arms. Many desperate patients turn to prescription pain pills, invasive spinal injections, and even back or neck surgery, trying to find relief. “In many cases, those traditional treatments fail because they do not address the cause of the problem, and instead focus on covering up the pain,” states Dr. Theeck. “This can leave patients frustrated and without hope, as they face the possibility of endless medications, injections, and surgeries.”

The painless solution

“With advancements in medical technology, there is now a way to treat the source of the pain! Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is a break-through, FDA cleared procedure that takes the pressure off bulging, herniated, or degenerative discs, allowing them to rehydrate and heal,” explains Dr. Theeck. “This often relieves pinching on the nerves and reduces pain. The best part is that spinal decompression helps to heal the injured areas, rather than just managing (or masking) the pain.” The treatment is non-invasive, pain-free, and drug-free. There are no needles or anesthesia and it can be completed in a few weeks on an outpatient basis. It is considered a viable and reliable alternative to surgery in many cases. Thousands of patients are treated every day using this procedure.

How decompression works

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression uses a specialized table that gently pulls the two vertebrae on either side of the affected disc, producing a vacuum effect. This allows bulging material to be drawn from the nerve and back into the disc, allowing it to heal naturally over time. Advanced technology and computerized load sensors combine to create a gentle, pain-free treatment that avoids the muscle spasm or guarding reflex that is commonly triggered with traditional rudimentary traction or inversion devices. “Most patients find spinal decompression to be very relaxing and it’s not uncommon to fall asleep during the procedure states Dr. Theeck. “Although results can vary, many of our patients report a reduction in pain after the first few sessions. Typically, there is a significant improvement by the second or third week of treatment.”

Spinal decompression helps reduce pain caused by:

  • Bulging or herniated discs
  • Degenerative discs
  • Sciatica
  • Pinched nerves
  • Arthritis of the spine
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Neck and arm pain
  • Car accidents

The full program

The treatment at Legacy Clinic includes a combination of the latest modalities to help patients get on their feet and out of pain. Spinal decompression, core strengthening, laser therapy, and manual therapy are among the many modalities incorporated into each program. ‘With so many different therapies available, we are able to customize a treatment program for each patient depending on their pain level and the cause of the pain,” says Dr. Theeck. “Our goal is to treat the source of the pain, so you can get back to living life again!”

What doctors are saying

“There is a place for surgery, but it is definitely not at the front line. Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy should be a front line treatment for chronic back pain patients suffering from bulging, herniated, or degenerative disc disease and facet syndrome. As a surgeon, I only want to do surgery when I absolutely have to. Spinal Decompression Therapy gives my patients a more conservative treatment option that can eliminate the need for surgery altogether, and that’s a very good thing. It also gives me a treatment option for those patients who have had surgery and relapse or experience a return of pain following surgery. It allows me to offer patients a key, non-surgical weapon on the war on back pain.” –Dr. Bernard Zeliger, DO FACOS, FAOAO, FICS, Osteopathic Physician and Orthopedic Surgeon; Founding Dean and Provost of Touro University. College of Osteopathic Medicine; Vellejo, CA, Former President of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.

What Patients are saying

“After suffering 2 bulging discs and 2 severely herniated discs and months of pain –such severe pain that I was thinking I could not go through the rest of my life like this, I went to a spine orthopedic doctor that offered nothing but shots and no real cure. I was not about to have a risky epidural or back surgery.

I came across Legacy Clinic and heard great things about the non-invasive decompression therapy. After just a few treatments I was able to sleep through the night for the first time in over 4 months. And after going through the full treatment I feel better than ever.

I would highly recommend Legacy Clinic’s decompression therapy to anyone having back pain. It saved my life.”

Vertigo in The Villages

Vertigo in the Villages

Have you ever had vertigo while in The Villages? A patient came in last week with symptoms and warning signs that kept getting worse. It started with a headache which led to vertigo symptoms. This led to numbness down the right arm and loss of vision.

She began to panic and thought she was having a stroke. The doctor suspected a brain tumor or a stroke. MRI was negative for any findings. The neurologist began treating the symptoms with medication, but the patient became worse. The patient thought she was going to just have to deal with these problems since nobody knew what was going on.

She came into Legacy Clinic desperate for answers. Upon examination, the doctors found the top cervical vertebra that protects the brainstem and controls all automatic reflexes to be misaligned. This vertebra was carefully aligned to allow the nerve pressure to be released. Over the next 12 hours the patient’s vertigo symptoms, vision problems, and neurological began to diminish.

When there is pressure on one of your spinal nerves your body will give off symptoms based on the location.

Spinal Decompression Treatment

IMG_1627

June 2020
What Is Spinal DecompressionSpinal decompression is a treatment that relieves pressure on the discs in between your vertebrae. Over time, pressure on these discs can cause bulging and even herniations. This pressure can also cause damage to the spine itself as well as the spinal cord. This damage can lead to excruciating pain caused by pinching on the nerves. Spinal decompression works by stretching and releasing the vertebrae in you lumbar or cervical spine in a way that your body will not fight against. Over time, your discs can reform to their natural shape and size, protecting you as they were meant to.

Lumbar decompression

Spinal DecompressionA therapist will secure a belt around your hips which attaches to a machine. This machine will then pull the belt (and your lower spine) to a set amount of pressure. The machine will hold at that pressure for 45 seconds after which, it will release to half the pressure allowing your muscles to relax. The amount of pressure will be gradually increased to achieve the maximum results for each individual.

Cervical Decompression

Cervical decompression works in much the same way as lumbar decompression.                                                    A therapist will place pads Cervical Decompressionon either side of your neck. This will slowly pull your neck to a set amount of pressure and hold for 30 seconds then release to half the pressure for 15 seconds. The goal of either decompression is to allow the discs to heal and retain the natural curvature that supports your body.

Acupuncture For Tight Muscles

Acupuncture for tight muscles

HOW DO YOU RELEASE MUSCLES AND TRIGGER POINTS WITH ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture for tight muscles releases trigger points by finding the most tender and tight band of muscle and using an acupuncture needle to poke the muscle and get it to involuntarily contract. Releasing a trigger point gets the muscle out of the shortened state and usually, after a few contractions, it softens and remains in a more elongated and relaxed state. As an acupuncturist, Dr. Perry can feel the resistance at the needle soften as trigger points and muscles are being released. Some patients describe the feeling as “popping a tension bubble” or “melting away tightness and tension.”

Acupuncture for tight muscles

Some trigger point conditions may resolve in one treatment while others may need five or more treatments for the muscle to reprogram itself. If it is a chronic condition and there are ongoing lifestyle factors that contribute to the issue it can take more time or reoccur if treatment is not frequent enough. There can be soreness in the muscle for up to 72 hours after trigger point release that feels like the muscle soreness after a workout.

It is recommended to apply warmth and engage in gentle movements in the days following trigger point release to help reduce soreness and promote blood circulation in the affected area. When a muscle is pain-free and unrestricted, it can move in its full range of motion will helps the body’s structural alignment.

Nervous system – Chiropractor in villages Florida

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

HAVE YOU HAD YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM

CHECKED LATELY?

Why are people flocking to Legacy Clinic 1 time per month?

Because the human body possesses a natural ability to heal itself, and this ability depends on a healthy nervous system.
Safe, specific spinal correction allows your body to heal faster and can even prevent disease. Your spine provides a basic
structure for the muscles and other parts of your body, performing several pivotal functions like support, protection and
flexibility. Nerves branching off the spinal cord also communicate with specific organs and regions of your body. For these
reasons alone, alignment of your spine is key. When your spine is healthy, your body functions as it was designed. However,
when misaligned or damaged, the life-giving power of your nervous system is interrupted, causing painful symptoms and
illness to pop up.

“What connects the mind to the body is the nervous system, which medical textbooks refer to as the master control system.
You will be amazed at how the spine and the nervous sytem are interrelated and connected to every aspect of our
expression of health and wellness.”

Facet Syndrome in the Villages Florida

Facet Syndrome in the Villages Florida

One of the most common causes of lower back pain is lumbar facet syndrome. A pair of facet joints extend out from each vertebra along the back of the spinal column (the side that faces out), which connect to the corresponding vertebrae above and below, allowing for movement in the spine. Like any other joints, they are subject to injury and conditions such as arthritis or repetitive motion disorder. The more activity someone does that JAMS the Vertebral discs than
the greater chances of facet syndrome. Your Lumbar spine is structured with a lordotic curve. That curve is formed to distribute the weight evenly on each vertebra. When you lose the lordotic curve from sitting or poor posture then your weight on your joints is not evenly distributed and creates too much force on your Lumbar facet joints. The lumbar facet joint can create pain stemming from a variety of causes. One of the most common causes is simply aging. As we get older, the cartilage in our joints wears down and the synovial fluid lessens, reducing the cushioning the cartilage provides, and allowing the bones of
the joint to rub together. Smokers are at greater risk for lumbar facet syndrome, as it has been proven that smoking leads to greater cartilage loss. Injury to the lumbar facet joints caused by trauma or overextension (a situation particularly common among athletes) can also lead to this syndrome.

The Spinal Facet Joint

Some of the symptoms of Facet Joint Syndrome include:
1.) Severe spinal pain, particularly when engaged in movement.
2.) Stiffness and limited motion ability in the area of the back.
3.) Pain becomes worse upon bending backward or straightening the back.
4.) When the lumbar nerve is affected, sciatica symptoms may occur.
5.) An onset of Pinched Nerve symptoms may arise, particularly in the area of the cervical spine.

Suffering from Facet Joint Syndrome

Individuals suffering from facet syndrome may feel worse in the morning, due to increased inflammation and stiffness that occurs during a resting period. They tend to have stiffness and usually will feel somewhat better after they have been moving around. As the day progresses they tend to be ok as long as they keep moving. However, for those having to work seated all day or work from a computer, they may find they are at a greater risk of experiencing pain
throughout the day. Patients often try shifting their posture in an attempt to find relief. But while this temporarily reduces discomfort, the resulting poor posture can trigger muscle spasms in the surrounding tissue, forcing the irritated facet joints more firmly together and making movement in the low back even more painful.

Treatment for Facet Joint Syndrome

People with lumbar facet syndrome respond particularly well to Chiropractic care in the Villages.
If you’re experiencing symptoms mentioned above and are looking for a chiropractor in The Villages, you can schedule a free consultation at Legacy Clinic of Chiropractic. While the mechanisms underlying facet syndrome are similar for everyone, there are factors unique to each patient, however, which determine what type of care will work best for you. If your condition is out of
our scope of care, or we believe someone else may be a better choice for you, we will research who the best medical professional would be and give you a referral.

The Villages Chiropractor – Legacy Clinic

Love the taste or hate it, apple cider vinegar has some pretty incredible health benefits. Made from fermented apples, research on this potent liquid has revealed promising results, including combating insulin and glucose spikes in type 2 diabetics, not to mention aiding weight loss. It can also soothe a sore throat and may relieve other symptoms of the flu, like nasal congestion and cough. Read on for some more reasons why you should add it to your health routine.
Like most things, the quality of the apple cider vinegar (ACV) matters. When purchasing ACV, select only raw organic vinegar—unlike other refined clear vinegars, this will be a murky brown color with sediment-like substance that settles to the bottom. It might not look pretty, but it’s the best and only option you should choose. You’ll also see labels that say “with the Mother,” sounds odd, but this means that it includes living nutrients and bacteria—this is the cobweb-like substance you’ll see floating in the vinegar.
ACV Uses and Benefits
There are various ways you can take ACV—take a small dose of around 1 to 2 teaspoons a day, dilute a spoonful in a glass of water, add it to an organic juice (preferably made in your juicer) or even mix it into your salad. Be cautious with continuous use of undiluted ACV; it is highly acidic and can be harsh on your tooth enamel. Here are a few of the possible benefits of ACV use—we encourage you to do more research to find other potential health benefits:
ACV is rich in potassium which aids the transmission of nerve impulses and helps to build muscles.
It’s high in acetic acid which can slow your body’s digestion of starch—this is what may lower the rise in glucose after a meal. A study done in 2004 and cited in Diabetes Care (an American Diabetes Foundation publication), demonstrated that participants with type 2 diabetes, prediabetes and even those without diabetes had better blood glucose readings when they took ACV before a meal. Those with type 2 saw a 25 percent improvement in their blood glucose levels.
Some research has also indicated ACV use may lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
ACV can balance your pH level due to its alkaline-forming properties. This has also been shown to regulate the presence of candida—which is a yeast-like fungus that aids digestion and nutrient absorption. When your body overproduces candida, it can cause many different health issues including fungal infections, digestive issues and chronic fatigue.
It may help relieve heartburn. It sounds counterintuitive, but some people get relief from taking a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar followed by a glass of water.
Try gargling ACV when you have a sore throat; the antibacterial properties of the vinegar may neutralize the infection. It can also help drain your sinuses when you’re stuffed up.
While there is research that shows a strong correlation between ACV use and various health benefits, these tips are not meant to be used in place of the recommendations of your healthcare professional and remember: what works for some, might not work for others.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Maximized Living Chiropractor in the Villages Florida

We talked to Dr. John C Theeck D.C., Legacy Clinic-The Villages about how he incorporates a personalized program for each patient.
CORRECTIVE CHIROPRACTIC

Each patient that comes into my office has a specific structural condition that is affecting their spine and therefore causing symptoms of headaches, neck pain, and/or arthritis. Your first appointment at Legacy Clinic utilizes comprehensive analyzation in our state of the art facility. We focus on finding the cause to your problem and therefore permanently correcting your symptoms. An injury to the spinal structure causes a change in the muscles, muscle memory, and spinal column.
Traditional chiropractors focus on aligning the spinal column, but do not focus on strengthen the effected structure.
Physical Therapists focus on stretching and strengthen the damaged muscles associated with the compensation that occurred from the structural changed of the spinal column.
Dr. John C Theeck at Legacy Clinic utilizes the pettibon technique which focuses on changing the structure, neuromuscular exercises, and y-axial adjustments. “Each patient that comes into my office has a different spine”. I have never seen 2 of the exact same spines which mean each person gets specific PERSONALIZED exercises for their condition.
Do you want your adjustments to hold and to learn about the Pettibon Technique?
