Trigger Point Acupuncture

What Are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are more commonly known as “knots” in our muscles. When there are too many of these “knots” it is called Myofascial Pain Syndrome. This can cause an alarming amount of pain and can often occur without warning. They tend to cluster around an injury and they can be a major factor in back and neck pain.

What Is Trigger Point Acupuncture?

Trigger Point Acupuncture (TPA) is a technique wehre a therapist will insert tiny needles into the affected muscles causing them to loosen and relax. Trigger points are believed to be micro-spasms in muscle tissue. By inserting the needle into the tissue, it temporarily blocks the signal controlling your muscle to spasm. Without this signal, your muscle is free to return to its natural state.

Why choose this method?

This method is great for relieving pain caused by trigger points. Those who have chronic severe pain may find that it doesn’t completely relieve the pain but lessens it to a greater extent than other options. Those with minor aches and “knots” can usually find whole relief from pain and can prevent the reoccurance.

CBD Cream and Oil

CBD Cream and Oil

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural compound found in the cannabis plant. Many people have misconceptions because this plant also produces THC which gives you the “stoned” or intoxicated feeling. Rest assured that CBD works in a much different way and does leave you feeling high. This part of the plant is purely used for medicinal purposes and studies have shown great success in treatment of a variety of diagnoses. We have held webinars int the past which delve much further into detail of how this works in the body. With that being said, we will touch on the main points here and we suggest speaking to your doctor or joining one of our webinars for further information. Please speak to a qualified person and DO NOT trust what you find on the web! There are great articles and misleading articles out there and it is hard to know the difference. CBD mimicks and augments the effects of compounds which naturally occur throughout our bodies. These compounds play a crucial role in a variety of physiological effects in our bodies which affect our everday lives such as: mood, energy, immunity, blood pressure, bone density and glucose metabolism to name just a few. Clearly these are some highly important processes. So what happens when the system which controls these processes isn’t functioning properly? To put it plainly, disease happens. CBD helps to regulate this system and assist where it is needed. This could mean boosting your immune system, lowering blood pressure, or just calming anxiety. It will have different effects for different people because they themselves have different needs. The best part is that it has received high marks in several studies on a range of topics and it is safe to use without having to worry about it becoming habit forming. CBD has no addictive qualities. There are two popular ways that CBD is sold. One is in a cream form and the other is in an oil form. They do have different purposes so it is important to know what you are looking to get relief from. The oil is administered under the tongue by a dropper. The oil works systemically meaning it is meant to help with pain over large areas of the body. It also has a calming effect which has helped many with a host of anxiety/panic disorders. The cream is more often used to treat acute pain and could be used for chronic pain in a smaller area of the body. For instance, if you have pain and inflammation in your knees, the cream can be directly applied to that area and will have better effects than the oil. Lastly, CBD is 100% legal in all 50 states and many countries. That being said, please use caution when travelling as the cream and oil still fall under the maximum ounces allowed in carry-on luggage. Not all countries have the same laws concerning CBD so please check in advance to avoid any potential problems. If you would like to learn more or if you have reservations about using this product, please contact us. Legacy Clinic: info@legacyclinic.org

Therapeutic Ultrasound

Therapeutic Ultrasound

What Does Ultrasound Do?

Therapeutic ultrasound is used primarily for two different effects: the deep heating treatment and non-thermal uses.

Deep Heating Effects: Ultrasound is often used to provide deep heating to soft tissue structures in the body. Deep heating tendons, muscles or ligaments increases circulation to those tissues, which is thought to help the healing process. Increasing tissue temperature with ultrasound is also used to help decrease pain.

Deep heating can be used to increase the “stretchiness” of muscles and tendons that may be tight. If you have shoulder pain and have been diagnosed with a frozen shoulder, your therapist may use ultrasound to help improve the extensibility of the tissues around your shoulder prior to performing range of motion exercises. This may help improve the ability of your shoulder to stretch.

Non-Thermal Effects (Cavitation): Ultrasound introduces energy into the body. This energy causes microscopic gas bubbles around your tissues to expand and contract rapidly, a process called cavitation. It is theorized that the expansion and contraction of these bubbles help speed cellular processes and improves healing of injured tissue.

How Does Ultrasound Work?

Inside your therapist’s ultrasound unit is a small crystal. When an electrical charge is applied to this crystal, it vibrates rapidly, creating piezoelectric waves. These waves are emitted from the ultrasound sound head as ultrasound waves. The ultrasound wave then enters into your injured tissues during application of the modality. This increases blood flow and cavitation, leading to the theorized benefits of the treatment.

How Is Ultrasound Applied?

Ultrasound is performed with a machine that has an ultrasound transducer (sound head). A small amount of gel is applied to the particular body part; then your therapist slowly moves the sound head in a small circular direction on your body. The therapist may change various settings of the ultrasound unit to control the depth of penetration of the ultrasound waves or change the intensity of the ultrasound. Different settings are used in various stages of healing.

Your therapist may use ultrasound gel combined with a topical medication to help treat inflammation around soft tissue in the body. This process is called phonophoresis.

What Ultrasound Feels Like

While you are receiving an ultrasound treatment, you will most likely not feel anything happening, except perhaps a slight warming sensation or tingling around the area being treated. If the ultrasound sound head is left in place on your skin and not moved in a circular direction, you may experience pain. If this occurs, tell your therapist right away.

Natural pain shots in The Villages – Cortisone injection side effects

Natural pain shots in The Villages – Cortisone injection side effects

Many of our patients have had a cortisone shot at one point or another. Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory which helps to reduce pain in the area that its injected. Studies have shown however, that overuse of cortisone can lead to cartilage damage in joints and ultimately lead to more pain down the road. Doctors often limit how many injections a patient can have in a certain period of time due to the possible risks involved. For those who have chronic pain and get relief from these shots, this can be hard news to hear

There is an alternative called prolotherapy. This therapy injects natural substances into the body which promote healing. These substances have been proven safe even in large amounts and because of this, multiple areas of the body can be treated at once. Studies have shown this therapy to be highly effective in relieving pain and without any side effects. One of two types of substances are used: those found in the body (bone marrow, adipose tissue, plasma) or dextrose which is very similar to d-glucose that is in your body.

Cortisone over-use has been studied for some time now. While the results do vary, we believe you should know what you’re having put into your body. Hyaluronic acid is a great tool to repair cartilage in our joints like knees, elbows and shoulders but damage from cortisone can not be repaired by this method. The following chart shows other differences between prolotherapy and cortisone injections.

If you are considering getting cortisone injections or are looking for a safer alternative to those you are already getting, please look into prolotherapy. If you have further questions, ask the doctor on your next visit.

Low Carb (Keto) Pizza Recipe

Low Carb (Keto) Pizza Recipe

This recipe works great for those who are trying ot cut carbs, work a ketogenic diet, or have gluten sensitivities. The best part is that unlike most low carb or diet foods, this is actually very tasty! Pizza has always and will always be a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, the pizza you get from restaurants or the frozen section are often loaded with gluten, sugar, carbs, and unhealthy oils. The thought of having to give up a staple of my diet was daunting but with this recipe I can enjoy a version of pizza that I don’t have to regret the moment I eat it. With just a few ingredients, you can be on your way:
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups mozzarella, shredded
  • 3/4 cup almond flour
  • 2 oz cream cheese, softened
  1. Preheat oven to 425F (220C)
  2. To make the dough: Combine mozzarella, cream cheese and almond flour into microwave safe bowl
  3. Microwave on high for 45 seconds, remove and stir ingredients, then heat again for another 45 seconds
  4. Use a spatula to stir in the beaten egg
  5. Use your hands, preferrably oiled, to knead the dough into a ball for about 2 minutes
  6. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and use a rolling pin to spread the dough. Using another parchment sheet on top of the dough may make rolling it easier.
  7. Roll the dough until the dough is as thick or thin as you like it to be. Poke the dough with a fork in several places to prevent bubbling when baking.
  8. Bake the dough until it is firm. Dark spots may appear. Times will vary slightly depending on thickness of dough.
  9. Add cheese, sauce and toppings preffered
  10. Enjoy!

Laser Therapy for Tendonitis

What is Tendonitis?

Tendonitis occurs when the flexible bands of tissue that connect the bones to the muscles become inflamed and painful. This is sometimes referred to as “tennis elbow” or “golfer’s elbow”, but it can happen throughout the body. Current treatments for tendonitis often revolve around stretching and conditioning, heavy use of anti-inflammatories, massage, and heat or ice packs. While these treatments can be effective, they often take a long time to work and excessive use of NSAIDs can lead to much more severe problems. Luckily, there’s good news!

Recently, high intensity laser therapy (HILT) has come to the foreground of techniques to treat tendonitis along with a host of other diagnoses. This technique has proven to be fast, reliable and safe. New research has added weight to the claims of laser therapy.

But how does it work?

We’re glad you asked. Laser therapy works by emitting light (laser) deep into the tissue. Studies have shown that it is able to penetrate further than ultrasound waves. The result of this is an improvement of tissue repair. It also increases the speed at which your lymphatic system drains from the injured areas. Research is showing that it also increases recruitment of cells to an injured area which speeds up your body’s natural healing process.

Yes, but DOES it work?

Another great question! Clinical studies have shown that patients treated with laser showed much greater decreases in pain. They also had better outcomes with joint mobility, functionality, and muscle strength.

Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome Relief: Natural Calm Supplement

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a disorder of the nervous system which causes a very strong urge to move your legs. It can also be accompanied by pain, throbbing and other rather unpleasant symptoms. The symptoms of RLS often become much more noticeable when you are inactive like sitting or lying down. For obvious reasons, this makes sleeping incredibly difficult for those affected by this disorder. Unfortunately, this lack of proper sleep can lead to increased agitation and need for caffeine making RLS worse.

There is a lot of evidence that a lack of magnesium in the body is related to RLS. Taking a daily dose of magnesium can help you acheive better quality and quantity of sleep as well as reducing the symtpoms. When our bodies are stressed, calcium enters the cells and makes the muscles tense up. Magnesium’s job is to push that calcium back out of the cell so the muscles can relax. When we don’t have enough magnesium to push all the calcium out of our cells, our muscles stay tense much longer and this can lead to pain and/or restlessness.

Natural Vitality has produced a supplement named Natural Calm. This “anti-stress drink” works to balance the calcium and magnesium levels in our bodies reducing stress and letting us feel more relaxed. This drink doesn’t just work for those with RLS symptoms. Too much stress in our lives can lead to more severe diseases. Calm reduces the amount of damage being done by replenishing us with the electrolytes we need to return to a relaxed state quickly after a stressful situation.

Previous treatments for RLS have included muscle relaxers, opiods and sleep medications. All of these can be harmful and, as we all know, opiods can be highly addictive. Try a bottle of Calm and see the results for yourself.

Dry Needling Technique

What Is Dry Needling?

The dry needling technique is based on similar theories as acupuncture and often uses the same needles as used during an acupuncture treatment. It is called dry needling because the needles used do not inject any medication like a syringe and are not coated in any medication. They are simply dry sterile needles. This technique is used for multiple purposes. Dry NeedlingThis technique involves inserting needles into the trigger points to reduce muscle tension among other things. Therapists are very well trained on all the areas that can be treated and the technique is very safe and often quite effective when performed by a trained therapist. Among the other results it could have are: pain control, normalizing biochemical and electrical dysfunction and speeds along the rehabilitation process.

Nail Fungus Removal

Nail Fungus Removal

Living in Florida, everyone wants to take their shoes off and walk in the sandy beaches once in a while. This can be embarrassing though if you suffer from toe nail fungus. Not only can it cause you embarrassment but it can spread to other toes or even your fingernails.

Fungi are very hardy microorganisms. For this reason the fungus is hard to get rid of. Past treatments have included pills (which have harsh side effects including possible liver damage), creams and even surgery to remove the nail. Even with all of this, the fungus can come back. The news is not all bad though. Studies have found that lasers specifically designed to treat this condition are quite effective. One study found that after only 4 treatments, 76% of the patients showed improvement. This procedure has great potential to replace common practices due to the fact that there are no known side effects, it is pain free and it takes far less time.

If you are diabetic or have a weakened immune system, a fungus left untreated could lead to more serious conditions also. If you suspect you may have a fungi in your nails or you just want some more information, contact us at…
