Piriformis Syndrome Management

Also known as pseudo sciatica, piriformis syndrome is a painful condition when the piriformis muscle puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. The piriformis muscle is a major hip flexor muscle (located in the buttocks). It plays an important role in stabilizing the hip joint and allows you to rotate the thigh (away from the body). Thus, a healthy piriformis is necessary for dancing, playing pickleball, and even walking.

As you age, the hip joint and the muscles undergo degeneration and there is a generalized loss of mobility. Thus, even simple activities lead to overstretching of the piriformis muscle fibers. This manifests as sharp radiating pain, numbness, burning, and tingling.

Diagnosing piriformis can be a little tricky for healthcare providers and treating it is even more problematic. The location and anatomical importance of piriformis make access and healing difficult. Therefore, there is a need for a special approach.

Piriformis Syndrome Treatment At The Legacy Clinic

While most health professionals emphasize cold application to provide relief from piriformis syndrome, Legacy clinic experts have cracked the code for quick and long-lasting relief. As per experienced professionals at the Legacy clinic (who have been dealing with piriformis patients for years), these are the most effective ways of relief:

Rest And Medications

Studies show that piriformis syndrome accounts for 6% of all low back pain cases. There are multiple (surgical and non-surgical) ways of treating the syndrome but the most important step is to take ample rest. Bed rest allows natural healing and pain-killer medications provide momentary relief from pain.

Ultrasound Therapy

The introduction of ultrasound (sound waves) within the body causes micro-vibrations of the tissues leading to heat production. This heat improves blood flow and thereby enhances the healing potential of the affected muscles. Interferential therapy and ultrasound therapy effectively strengthen the piriformis muscle and help relieve symptoms. According to a study, continuous ultrasound therapy alleviates pain in different kinds of pain syndromes like piriformis and myofascial pain syndrome.

Heat Application

According to experts, heat application does a wonderful job of releasing muscle tension. Diathermy, also known as deep heating, is a procedure that induces heat by delivering electromagnetic currents (high frequency) into the body.

Shortwave diathermy is frequently employed to relieve piriformis syndrome patients. The procedure has shown promising results. Therefore, it is an important modality at the Legacy Clinic. At the clinic, most patients become pain-free with a couple of sessions, thanks to the deep penetration of the waves and enhanced internal healing. However, if a patient doesn’t get relief after four sessions, Dr. Perry advises trigger point injections.

Trigger Point Injections

A trigger point in a muscle is a tender, and painful-to-touch point that arises due to muscle knots. If conventional therapies (ultrasound, diathermy, physical therapy) are ineffective, doctors opt for trigger point injections to achieve quick results.

A trigger point injection (TPI) may be void of any substance i.e., dry needling which physically releases the muscle tension. However, sometimes, doctors inject corticosteroids or botulinum toxin for inflammation reduction and muscle relaxation, respectively.

TPI technique is proven to be effective in the management of piriformis syndrome. New studies reveal that dry needling (trigger point injections) can reduce pain within 15 minutes of administration. Case studies show that symptoms of multiple patients resolved after dry needling which significantly improved quality of life.

Piriformis Syndrome Care At Legacy Clinic

If your piriformis syndrome keeps you off the pickleball court and conventional therapies have failed, we suggest you visit the Legacy Clinic of Chiropractic. Here, seasoned clinicians like Dr. Perry will use diathermy and trigger point injections to wane off the discomfort and improve your quality of life.

Feel Well. Live Well. Age Well: Legacy Clinic of Chiropractic

Chiropractors In The Villages

We all need a back alignment now and then, but we put it off. We’re not feeling any pain at the moment. Or we may have gone once, but it didn’t fix the problem. Maybe we feel that we’re just too young to see one. All of these are common misconceptions that keep us from living life to its fullest. Dr. John Theeck and his highly qualified team at Legacy Clinic of Chiropractic are ready to answer any questions you may have. It starts with getting to know you through a free one-on-one consultation. Each patient is provided with their own personalized Chiropractic treatment that ensures maximum results without the use of drugs or surgery.

“I have been going to Legacy Clinic for a little over 10 years and would never think of going anywhere else,” patient Christine Democritus writes in a review. “Dr. Theeck offers a wonderful variety of treatments to get you out of pain. All the doctors are terrific! You won’t go wrong with any of them. They really care about you.”

How PRP is helping patients in The Villages

One of the biggest woes with recovery is time, especially if surgery is involved.  Life as we know it passes us by while we wait to get back on track with daily activities we love doing. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy builds on the body’s natural ability to heal by using the patient’s own platelets to accelerate the healing process in a targeted area of the body. It’s not only used to treat chronic lower back pain and the occasionally torn rotator cuff but conditions like osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, and Achilles tendinosis. There are also situations where we may have joint inflammation. Prolozone injections help offer relief through homeopathic anti-inflammatory medications and vitamins to reduce inflammation and swelling while increasing circulation. Oxygen is then delivered to the area in the form of ozone. Don’t worry about making a day out of it. Each procedure takes under an hour and they are both non-surgical with no use of drugs, steroids, narcotics, or NSAIDs.

“They’re not like a steroid which is going to mask the pain,” Dr. Theeck said.

Legacy Clinic doesn’t just offer help with the musculoskeletal system. All of us get frustrated when we try to lose weight. The fact that there are so many advertisements out there offering a variety of different options doesn’t make it any easier.

Weight Loss Program in The Villages

Elite Wellness Physician Dr. Chris Kessler meets with patients one-on-one to develop a program specifically suited to each patient’s needs.

“It’s natural and helps shred fat cells,” Dr. Theeck said. “There’s no starvation, no packaged food, no exercise, and no side effects whatsoever.”

Come see why Legacy Clinic of Chiropractic is one of the most highly reviewed chiropractic treatment clinics in The Villages. Schedule a free consultation today and get cracking on living life to the fullest!

Acupuncture Treats Heart Disease

February is Heart Health Month. The celebration was created in 1963 to bring more awareness to the prevalence of heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in this country, it causes more than 800,000 heart attacks occurring each year in the U.S. alone. Acupuncture treats heart disease.

What is heart disease?

Heart disease occurs when there is a breakdown in the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the heart.  Often, this is a result of plaque buildup in the arteries or vessels. Plaque accumulates when there is damage to the vessel walls. A few of the common contributors that cause this damage are high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, and smoking.

Why is heart disease so prevalent?

Lifestyle plays a big role in either preventing or producing heart disease. Those who exercise regularly, watch what they eat, and manage their stress, are far less likely to experience heart disease in their lifetime.  However, most people succumb to the typical modern lifestyle that consists of a lot of sitting, a lot of stress, and very little exercise. This lifestyle can also contribute to diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. These are also risk factors for heart disease.

The good news is that we can impact our heart health by changing our daily habits. The bad news is that a total lifestyle overhaul can be very intimidating. Enter, acupuncture.  Acupuncture is a great way to both treat and prevent heart disease.  It requires minimal effort on your part and doesn’t take up a lot of extra time.

How acupuncture treat heart disease?

Acupuncture helps decrease stress and regulate the stress response. The body has a natural reaction to perceived stress known as the sympathetic or “fight or flight” response.  It increases heart rate and blood pressure and releases glucose into the bloodstream for immediate use. This is good if we are trying to escape a burning building, but this response is also activated when we are pressed by work deadlines, or continually worried about paying our bills. Over time these small stressors have the sympathetic response working overtime and it starts to negatively impact digestion, sleep, mood, and of course our heart.

The fix to the “fight or flight” response is an activation of the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for functions that allow us to rest, digest, and heal. This helps bring our heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels back to normal. Acupuncture is very effective at activating this response. Consistent treatment can bring your system back into alignment and possibly reverse the negative impacts of chronic stress, helping to prevent further damage such as heart disease.

Acupuncture mitigates other risk factors. Studies have shown that acupuncture successfully treats conditions such as diabetes. It can help lower blood glucose levels and positively impact insulin sensitivity in individuals with the disease. Managing the symptoms of diabetes can lower the risk of developing heart disease.

If smoking is putting you at higher risk, then acupuncture may help you quit.  Although more research is needed, current studies show promise that acupuncture is a useful tool for smoking cessation by decreasing cravings and reducing symptoms of withdrawal.

Conclusion

Heart disease doesn’t have to be your fate. Acupuncture is a practice you can implement right away as a preventative measure. Not only will you be helping your future self, but your present self will reap the benefits as well.  You will notice that you sleep better, have more energy, less stiffness and less stress with only a few treatments. Ongoing care will help you feel your best and keep you healthy as you age.

Posture Health

Good posture health is extremely important. Poor posture can lead to pain and could lead to degeneration of the spine over time. Rounded shoulders posture describes the appearance of shoulders that are further forward than normal. People who have rounded shoulders often also have forward head position and increased slouching of the upper back.

As you can imagine poor posture health causes enormous stress on the neck and shoulders. This can lead to: neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, sleep disorders, and numbness among other things.

Some common causes for rounded shoulders include: sitting for extended periods in front of a computer, reading or texting on the phone with your head down, driving for extended periods of time in a bad posture, sleeping with poor posture, excessive weight training, cycling in poor posture and carrying heavy backpacks.

At Legacy Clinic, we want to help. A great exercise to help train your body is the doorway exercise. No need to go out and buy any equipment so long as you have a doorway! We encourage our patients to complete this 3-5 times a week. This easy exercise will help loosen the abs and chest muscles.

How to do it:

Stand in the doorway and align your hands and elbows with the door frame.

Posture Health

Step through the doorway until you feel the stretch.

Hold this position for 15-20 seconds, then return to the starting position.

Repeat this stretch 3 times.

If you’re suffering from rounded shoulders or think your posture could use some correcting, contact Legacy Clinic today and let them show you the proper ways to realign your body.

Promising Treatment to Avoid Back Surgery

Local doctor offers promising treatment to avoid back and neck surgery

An estimated 30 million Americans suffer from back and neck pain on a daily basis. According to Dr. John Theeck of Legacy Clinic, one common culprit is an injury or wear and tear to the gel-filled cushions or discs in the spine. This can lead to painful bulging or herniated discs, and degenerative disc disease. Even worse, the bulging or herniated discs may begin to pinch the delicate spinal nerves, causing sciatica, stenosis, or radiculopathy. This can result in debilitating back or neck pain, as well as pain, numbness, or weakness traveling into the buttocks, legs, or arms. Many desperate patients turn to prescription pain pills, invasive spinal injections, and even back or neck surgery, trying to find relief. “In many cases, those traditional treatments fail because they do not address the cause of the problem, and instead focus on covering up the pain,” states Dr. Theeck. “This can leave patients frustrated and without hope, as they face the possibility of endless medications, injections, and surgeries.”

The painless solution

“With advancements in medical technology, there is now a way to treat the source of the pain! Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is a break-through, FDA cleared procedure that takes the pressure off bulging, herniated, or degenerative discs, allowing them to rehydrate and heal,” explains Dr. Theeck. “This often relieves pinching on the nerves and reduces pain. The best part is that spinal decompression helps to heal the injured areas, rather than just managing (or masking) the pain.” The treatment is non-invasive, pain-free, and drug-free. There are no needles or anesthesia and it can be completed in a few weeks on an outpatient basis. It is considered a viable and reliable alternative to surgery in many cases. Thousands of patients are treated every day using this procedure.

How decompression works

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression uses a specialized table that gently pulls the two vertebrae on either side of the affected disc, producing a vacuum effect. This allows bulging material to be drawn from the nerve and back into the disc, allowing it to heal naturally over time. Advanced technology and computerized load sensors combine to create a gentle, pain-free treatment that avoids the muscle spasm or guarding reflex that is commonly triggered with traditional rudimentary traction or inversion devices. “Most patients find spinal decompression to be very relaxing and it’s not uncommon to fall asleep during the procedure states Dr. Theeck. “Although results can vary, many of our patients report a reduction in pain after the first few sessions. Typically, there is a significant improvement by the second or third week of treatment.”

Spinal decompression helps reduce pain caused by:

  • Bulging or herniated discs
  • Degenerative discs
  • Sciatica
  • Pinched nerves
  • Arthritis of the spine
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Neck and arm pain
  • Car accidents

The full program

The treatment at Legacy Clinic includes a combination of the latest modalities to help patients get on their feet and out of pain. Spinal decompression, core strengthening, laser therapy, and manual therapy are among the many modalities incorporated into each program. ‘With so many different therapies available, we are able to customize a treatment program for each patient depending on their pain level and the cause of the pain,” says Dr. Theeck. “Our goal is to treat the source of the pain, so you can get back to living life again!”

What doctors are saying

“There is a place for surgery, but it is definitely not at the front line. Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy should be a front line treatment for chronic back pain patients suffering from bulging, herniated, or degenerative disc disease and facet syndrome. As a surgeon, I only want to do surgery when I absolutely have to. Spinal Decompression Therapy gives my patients a more conservative treatment option that can eliminate the need for surgery altogether, and that’s a very good thing. It also gives me a treatment option for those patients who have had surgery and relapse or experience a return of pain following surgery. It allows me to offer patients a key, non-surgical weapon on the war on back pain.” –Dr. Bernard Zeliger, DO FACOS, FAOAO, FICS, Osteopathic Physician and Orthopedic Surgeon; Founding Dean and Provost of Touro University. College of Osteopathic Medicine; Vellejo, CA, Former President of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.

What Patients are saying

“After suffering 2 bulging discs and 2 severely herniated discs and months of pain –such severe pain that I was thinking I could not go through the rest of my life like this, I went to a spine orthopedic doctor that offered nothing but shots and no real cure. I was not about to have a risky epidural or back surgery.

I came across Legacy Clinic and heard great things about the non-invasive decompression therapy. After just a few treatments I was able to sleep through the night for the first time in over 4 months. And after going through the full treatment I feel better than ever.

I would highly recommend Legacy Clinic’s decompression therapy to anyone having back pain. It saved my life.”

Back pain in The Villages

Many people suffer from back pain of one degree to another.

10’s of BILLIONS of dollars are spent each year managing pain relief and back care, but until recently, little focus has been spent on chiropractic care. With a strong push to progressively keep ourselves healthy through diet and exercise, chiropractic adjustments have gained notice for their therapeutic benefits. Spinal manipulation has been shown to decrease pain and stress levels among many other things. It has also been shown to increase blood flow, improve joint mobility and boost your immune system naturally to name just a few of the myriad of benefits.

The question is; why do we keep spending hard earned money to siomply manage the pain? Why not treat the underlying cause and get RID of the pain? Because chiropractic care is still relatively new to the general public, some might see it as unproven. Others think it will require too much work on their part.

Chiropractic care is and has been a proven method for treating pain and has been around for much longer than people realize. Dr. Palmer gave the first chiropractic adjustment in 1895!

Treating your body well IS part of being well. Sometimes medicines are what we need, other times they simply mask what’s really going on. If you think treating your body right is too much trouble, think about this:

The doctors at Legacy Clinic want you to be your best self and live your best life, offering a variety of treatment options from chiropractic adjustments to weight loss to acupuncture and massage. Whatever your health needs, you can almost certainly find them at Legacy!

B12 injections in The Villages, FL

Vitamin B12 is a surprisingly necessary vitamin.

Vitamin B12 has so many positive effects on the body that we would never even think of. For instance, it is crucial in developing new red blood cells and preventing anemia. It also supports the normal function of your nerve cells and is needed for DNA synthesis. That’s a lot to ask of a vitamin, but it does much more!

B12 also…

  • Helps prevent major birth defects
  • Supports bone health and may prevent osteoporosis
  • Reduces risk of macular degeneration
  • May improve mood and symptoms of depression
  • Prevents the loss of neurons, benefitting your brain
  • May give you an energy boost
  • Could improve heart health
  • Supports healthy hair, skin and nails

Is there anything else you could ask for? We didn’t think so either. Unfortunately, studies have shown that about 6% of the people in the US are deficient in this vitamin and around 20% are borderline low. Think about all this vitamin does and then think of what happens when you don’t have enough.

So what can you do if you think you might be low or defeicient? Well, luckily, we have options. B12 is now offered in injectable form so that your body can get the most use out of it. While B12 has shown no signs of danger from overuse, you should consult with your physician if you have any concerns.

B12 can not be made naturally by our bodies. It is only found in animal products, therefore those on a strict vegan diet nay be low even with certain foods being fortified with the vitamin. Other reasons include: bariatric surgery or bowel resection, age, those with GI diseases such as Crohn’s and Celiac, people taking Metformin to control their blood sugar and thos taking proton pump inhibitors (Prevacid, Prilosec, etc) for chronic heartburn.
