What to Do for a Strained Muscle or Angry Joint?

Leaving a Legacy

Muscle strains and tears are common types of sports injuries that can lead to pain and discomfort. Hectic activities involving brisk top and lower body movements (such as golf or pickleball) make you more prone to pulling a muscle.

Have you imagined what happens when someone pulls a muscle while playing or running around with the grandkids? Even the simplest of household chores such as gardening can land you into trouble (and pain).

The soft tissues of your body have immense potential for stretching. However, overstretching of a tendon or a muscle can cause them to give away.

Muscles, like other parts of the body, need water to function properly. A shortfall in water supply can promote cramping and straining. Dehydration plays a significant role in the development of muscle strains.

Though muscle strain is caused by injury, overstretching, and improper forces, the hydration status of the muscle cannot be ignored. Muscle strains are commonly seen in the leg region.

Symptoms of a Strained Muscle

To be able to identify a strained or pulled muscle you must first know the muscle strain symptoms. Pain and difficulty moving are a primary feature. This is accompanied by swelling and bruising of the skin. Some patients also report snapping and popping sensations

How To Manage A Strained Muscle?

In most cases, muscle strain management is easy. The main aim of the treatment is to alleviate pain and inflammation.

R.I.C.E vs. R.H.H.W.

In recent years, the term R.I.C.E (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) was the staple recommendation behind injuries.

However, after detailed examination and patient analysis Doc John Theeck recommends patients adopt R.H.H.W instead of the conventional R.I.C.E. The chiropractor in The Villages at Legacy Clinic has used R.H.H.W for many years and has had amazing recovery results.

R.I.C.E is the conventional method of treating a pulled muscle that involves rest (R), ice application (I), compression (C), and elevation (E). Contrary to popular belief Dr. JT Anderson, an experienced expert of chiropractic treatment, suggests patients go for rest (R), heat (H), hydration (H), and (W). Generally, a mild muscle strain takes anywhere between one to six weeks to heal completely. However, with these steps, you can recover much faster.

Heat helps soothe joints and relax muscles and is used to treat chronic pain. Heat reduces muscle aching and stiffness and works by improving circulation and blood flow to the affected area. It can also increase muscle flexibility and promote the healing of damaged tissue.

Some of the more seasoned patients prefer icing their joints because their joints feel hot and painful, and that brings them comfort. However many arthritic patients prefer heating their joints to help loosen up the stiffness and alleviate pain.

The most important instruction in muscle strain management is:

DO NOT ice a strained muscle or stretch an injured muscle or tendon.

Legacy recommends that patients take Inflammation to reduce inflammation *3x per day, the Collagen Joint Complex *3x per day, and the CBD Clinic-Level 5 as a natural topical pain reliever which helps to calm down nerve pain, muscle soreness, and injured ligaments, tendons, and cartilage.

Please always ask a Legacy doctor if you need help with patient care. We are here as a team to provide excellent treatment recommendations!

McKenzie Exercises In The Villages

Also known as the Mechanical diagnosis and therapy (MDT), the McKenzie method is a treatment strategy adopted to manage different types of pains. Various types of exercises fall under the Mckenzie method. The main aim of these exercises is to treat sciatica and radicular pain. If your back pain keeps you tossing all night and conventional therapies fail to provide relief, the McKenzie method is ideal for you!

What Are McKenzie’s Exercises?

The McKenzie method was developed by physiotherapist Robin McKenzie in an attempt to cure musculoskeletal disorders and spinal problems. It is a unique approach involving customized exercise-based treatment.

How Does It Work?

Centralization Of Pain

This treatment strategy revolves around the centralization of the pain. Centralization refers to changes in the pain location on movement. For example, the location of pain changes from the leg to the back (or close to the body’s center). The physical therapist/chiropractor determines this by making the patients undergo repeated motions (extension or flexion). Patients capable of centralizing their pain are called “responders” while others are termed “non-responders”.

By achieving the centralization of pain, the healthcare provider alleviates the more severe form of pain i.e., radiating pain. Central pain is generally well tolerated by the patients. So, immediate relief from radiating nerve pain is rewarding.

Directional Preference

The type of movement (in most cases extension) that leads to pain relief is called the directional preference. In multiple sciatica cases, backward bending centralizes pain and indicates a directional preference. Pain management is easier with the determination of the directional preference of the patient.

How Are McKenzie’s Exercises Performed?

It is a multi-step procedure. In the first visit, the physical therapist takes the complete history of pain and carries out a physical examination. This involves demanding different movements from the patient (to centralize). Centralization phenomenon and directional preference are identified. Then the patient is classified as:

  • Derangement syndrome
  • Dysfunction syndrome
  • Postural syndrome
  • Non-mechanical syndrome

After accurate stratification, therapeutic exercises are prescribed by the therapist. These exercises not only improve symptoms but also promote healing and recovery. The exercises are performed under the therapist’s supervision.

In the next step, self-treatment with these exercises is taught to the patient for home management. The therapist continues to monitor the progress and suggests any changes accordingly.

Benefits Of McKenzie Exercises

MDT/McKenzie exercises help in the treatment of the following conditions:

Common Types Of Mckenzie Exercises

  • Lying prone
  • Lying extended
  • Standing extended

Regenerative Treatments In The Villages

What is Prolozone Therapy? How Does It Work?

Prolozone therapy is a form of regenerative medicine where doctors use injections of ozone in liquid form along with other therapeutic elements to stimulate the body’s tissues to heal themselves.

How Prolozone Therapy Works

Prolozone therapy is a non-surgical option for patients dealing with tissue injuries, and strains. The serum used in this therapy is created using a combination of elements such as:

  • Liquid ozone
  • Vitamins and minerals
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Homeopathic medicines
  • Anesthetic agents
  • Cells that stimulate tissue regeneration

Effects of Prolozone Therapy

When doctors introduce ozone into the affected area, it improves blood circulation. As a result, the treatment site receives a fresh flow of oxygen and nutrients.

Ozone also attracts healing cells like fibroblasts and chondrocytes so they set off a reaction of tissue regeneration using the flush of nutrients available to them. The additional vitamins and minerals in the serum also support the repair of tissues while lowering inflammation levels.

Conditions that Can Heal

You can get Prolozone therapy to supplement conventional medicine for various conditions such as:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Plantas Fasciitis
  • Arthritis in the joints
  • Back pain resulting from damaged vertebra or discs
  • Osteoarthritis in the spine, knee, or hips
  • Shoulder pain from rotator cuff injuries
  • Trauma from playing sports

Causes of Muscle Pains

Ligaments and tendons are soft collagen-like tissues that support the structure of your body.

They connect bones with one another and also attach muscles to the bones. For example, ligaments keep the vertebra and discs in your spine stable so your back remains flexible. Because of their elastic texture, ligaments allow free movement so you can go about your regular activities. In case you’ve had an injury or surgical procedure, the supporting tissues could get damaged.

Excessive use of a particular joint or muscle like when you’re playing sports or working a labor-intensive job could also strain the ligaments. You start to sense pain because of the nerve endings present in the tissues reacting to the stress.

Posture Health

Good posture health is extremely important. Poor posture can lead to pain and could lead to degeneration of the spine over time. Rounded shoulders posture describes the appearance of shoulders that are further forward than normal. People who have rounded shoulders often also have forward head position and increased slouching of the upper back.

As you can imagine poor posture health causes enormous stress on the neck and shoulders. This can lead to: neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, sleep disorders, and numbness among other things.

Some common causes for rounded shoulders include: sitting for extended periods in front of a computer, reading or texting on the phone with your head down, driving for extended periods of time in a bad posture, sleeping with poor posture, excessive weight training, cycling in poor posture and carrying heavy backpacks.

At Legacy Clinic, we want to help. A great exercise to help train your body is the doorway exercise. No need to go out and buy any equipment so long as you have a doorway! We encourage our patients to complete this 3-5 times a week. This easy exercise will help loosen the abs and chest muscles.

How to do it:

Stand in the doorway and align your hands and elbows with the door frame.

Posture Health

Step through the doorway until you feel the stretch.

Hold this position for 15-20 seconds, then return to the starting position.

Repeat this stretch 3 times.

If you’re suffering from rounded shoulders or think your posture could use some correcting, contact Legacy Clinic today and let them show you the proper ways to realign your body.

Titleist Golf Chiropractor

Dr. Chris Kessler is a Titleist Performance Institute certified doctor and The Villages Golf Team’s go to chiropractor.

Dr Chris has been helping patients in the Villages area for years and many of them have come to him for help improving their game. Through a variety of techniques, Dr. Chris has been able to help golfers relieve pain, correct posture and improve their swings. Aside from being certified through Titleist, he is also an avid golfer.

Titleist Cerified

Some patients need work on their foundations. Not their golf foundations, but their body’s foundations. Our feet are more important than most people realize and the tiniest shifts can make a world of difference. Dr. Chris is certified through the Foot Levelers company to get you custom fit orthotics which can restore balance to your whole frame. These orthotics are different than the ones you find in stores because they are specific to your feet. They also take in to account all 3 arches in your feet to ensure the best support.

Another way Dr. Chris is able to help his patients is through chiropractic care. By adjusting and maintaining a healthy spine, patients often have less pain in general and can swing through more thoroughly. The pain relief alone is worth coming in, but imagine being able to fully swing the club where you couldn’t before. How many yards would that add to your drive?

In addition, Dr. Chris teaches his patients proper posture and swing techniques to keep them enjoying the game they love. Swinging the club without proper posture may not hurt the first time, but repetitive stress on the spine and other joints can lead to very painful degeneration.

If you want to improve your game, come and see the Titleist Golf Chiropractor in The Villages. Call Legacy Clinic today to schedule an appointment and see what Dr. Chris can do for you.

Decompression For The Spine in The Villages

Looking for decompression for the spine in The Villages?

Many people are unfamiliar with what exactly decompression for the spine in The Villages is. Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression uses a specialized table that gently pulls the two vertebrae on either side of the affected disc. This allows bulging material to be drawn from the nerve and back into the disc, allowing it to heal naturally over time. Advanced technology creates a gentle, pain-free treatment that avoids the muscle spasm or guarding reflex that is commonly triggered with traditional rudimentary traction or inversion devices.

Spinal decompression

Is decompression painful?

Most patients find spinal decompression to be very relaxing and it’s not uncommon to fall asleep during the procedure. The gentle pulling and releasing motion can be very soothing and having the pressure relieved from your nerves can put you into a very relaxed state. Although results can vary, many of our patients report a reduction in pain after the first few sessions. Typically, there is a significant improvement by the second or third week of treatment.

Is decompression effective?

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is a breakthrough, FDA cleared procedure that takes the pressure off bulging, herniated, or degenerative discs, allowing them to rehydrate and heal. This often relieves pinching on the nerves and reduces pain. The best part is that decompression helps to heal the injured areas, rather than just managing (or masking) the pain.
The treatment is non-invasive, pain-free, and drug-free. There are no needles or anesthesia and it can be completed in just a few weeks. It is considered a viable and reliable alternative to surgery in many cases. Thousands of patients are treated every day using this procedure.

What is it good for?

Bulging or herniated discs may begin to pinch the delicate spinal nerves, causing sciatica, stenosis, or radiculopathy. This can result in debilitating back or neck pain, as well as numbness, or weakness. Many desperate patients turn to prescription pain pills, invasive spinal injections, and even back or neck surgery, trying to find relief.
“In many cases, those traditional treatments fail because they do not address the cause of the problem, and instead focus on covering up the pain,” states Dr. Theeck. “This can leave patients frustrated and without hope, as they face the possibility of endless medications, injections, and surgeries.”

Back pain in The Villages

Many people suffer from back pain of one degree to another.

10’s of BILLIONS of dollars are spent each year managing pain relief and back care, but until recently, little focus has been spent on chiropractic care. With a strong push to progressively keep ourselves healthy through diet and exercise, chiropractic adjustments have gained notice for their therapeutic benefits. Spinal manipulation has been shown to decrease pain and stress levels among many other things. It has also been shown to increase blood flow, improve joint mobility and boost your immune system naturally to name just a few of the myriad of benefits.

The question is; why do we keep spending hard earned money to siomply manage the pain? Why not treat the underlying cause and get RID of the pain? Because chiropractic care is still relatively new to the general public, some might see it as unproven. Others think it will require too much work on their part.

Chiropractic care is and has been a proven method for treating pain and has been around for much longer than people realize. Dr. Palmer gave the first chiropractic adjustment in 1895!

Treating your body well IS part of being well. Sometimes medicines are what we need, other times they simply mask what’s really going on. If you think treating your body right is too much trouble, think about this:

The doctors at Legacy Clinic want you to be your best self and live your best life, offering a variety of treatment options from chiropractic adjustments to weight loss to acupuncture and massage. Whatever your health needs, you can almost certainly find them at Legacy!
